Reclaiming Your Pet

  • Reclaim Your Pet from the Door County Humane SocietyYou must be at least 18 years old to reclaim an animal.
  • When you know your pet is at Wisconsin Humane Society Door County Campus, contact the Animal Care Coordinator to schedule a pick-up time.
  • If you are reclaiming a dog, or if you are reclaiming a cat and live in the City of Sturgeon Bay, you are legally required to provide proof of current rabies vaccination (e.g. a rabies certificate). If your pet is vaccinated but you cannot provide proof, you must provide contact information for your veterinarian so that WHS Door County Campus can confirm that the animal has been vaccinated. If your pet is not current with its rabies vaccination, you are required to sign an agreement stating that you will take your pet to the vet within two weeks of the reclaim to have it vaccinated. WHS Door County Campus will follow up on this agreement.
  • If you are reclaiming a cat and live outside the City of Sturgeon Bay you are not legally required to provide proof of rabies vaccination.
  • The reclaim fee for a dog or cat increases each time the animal is brought to WHS Door County Campus. Reclaim fees are as follows:
    • First reclaim: $20 for the first day; $25 for each additional day
    • Second reclaim: $40 for the first day; $25 for each additional day
    • Third reclaim: $60 for the first day; $25 for each additional day
    • Fourth reclaim: $80 for the first day; $25 for each additional day
    • Fifth reclaim: $100 for the first day; $25 for each additional day
  • If your pet is brought in to the shelter multiple times, the reclaim fee may be higher and the police may issue a citation.

Note: By law, dogs must be rabies vaccinated, and WHS Door County Campus encourages all pet owners to keep their cats and dogs up to date on all vaccinations.
