If you would like to adopt a pet from our shelter, it is helpful to have the adoption application completed in advance. Please use the Adoption Application link, print out the form and bring it with you on your visit. It can also be faxed to 920-746-4681. This will expedite your adoption.
You will need Adobe Acrobat to print out the adoption application.

Petsmart Adoptions
DCHS cats are also adopted through the PetSmart in Ashwaubenon. This gives us access to a much larger metropolitan area where the demand for cats is greater. The volunteers at PetSmart are the ones that make the program possible – we are so grateful for their help.
PetSmart phone: 920.497.1183
PetSmart hours are:
• Tuesday 5:00 - 8:00pm
• Thursday 5:00 - 8:00pm
• Friday 5:00 - 8:00pm
• Saturday 12:00 - 4:00pm
• Sunday 10:00am - 2:00pm
Located at: 825 Pilgrim Way, corner of Oneida & Holmgren Way, Ashwaubenon
The adoption application/approval process is identical to our Sturgeon Bay location.
Barn Cats
We frequently have stray feral cats that cannot be “rehabilitated” into family pets. DCHS offers vaccinated, spayed/neutered barn cats at no cost to a good farm.
Crematorium Services
The Door County Humane Society is pleased to offer Crematorium services. Your pet will be treated with the greatest respect during the cremation process by one of our DCHS staff members. Please call to make an appointment. We offer both Private and Group cremations. A Private cremation is one where you will receive the remains back in a nice urn. The group cremation is where the remains will be scattered on our private fields. There are plans on making a nice memorial walk through the fields, as funds become available. If you would like to help us in this endeavor, please click on the donate now button above to donate securely over the web. Please note on the following pages that this donation would
like to be used for the memorial walk. You can also donate by stopping at the shelter or mailing a check. The prices for cremations are as follows:
Under 50 LBs. - $40 group, remains scattered in our private fields
Under 50 LBs. - $80 private, remains returned in a nice urn
51 LBs. - 100 LBs. - $80 group, remains scattered in our private fields
51 LBs. - 100 LBs. - $120 private, remains returned in a nice urn
Surrendering Animals
If you are no longer able to keep your pet, please call the shelter to make an appointment to surrender your pet. It is very important that your pet has current vaccinations and no long term health issues. On occasion we may be too full to take your pet and we will have to schedule a surrender for a later date. Surrenders may also be denied due to temperament or ill health. Our surrender fees are as follows:
$25 - Dog or Cat over 6 months of age
$10 - Kitten or Puppy
When you arrive at the shelter after making an appointment to surrender an animal, please first come in to the lobby without the animal. We'll complete the information form and then the dog or cat can be brought in to the intake area where a kennel/cage will have been set up with bedding, food and water.
Reclaims
If your pet becomes lost, please contact the Door County Humane Society with as much information as possible about the animal. If your pet is found at the shelter, the following fees apply:
$20 for the first day and $10 for each day after the first
You must be able to show proof of current vaccinations, including rabies, before we are able to release your pet.
Stray Animals
The Door County Humane Society does not travel to pick up stray, abandoned or abused animals - we do not have those resources.
DCHS has no law enforcement authority so we do not investigate nor remove animals from owners. We do not issue citations.
To have a stray animal picked up in the city of Sturgeon Bay please contact the Sturgeon Bay Police Department at 920-746-2450. If you are not in the city we suggest calling one of your Town or Village board members. There are also several Southern Door townships that have constables who can pick up animals. See the Government Pages of your phone book.
DCHS accepts Visa and MasterCard for all services, adoptions and surrenders.
DCHS will not put down an animal except for extreme cause. We will tirelessly care for a homeless animal that is brought in to our facility or, space permitting, an animal surrendered by an owner.
The Door County Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit agency. We do not receive any funds from the County of Door.
